Karylle scores gold for ‘K’

Singer-actress-TV host Karylle received a Gold Record Award for her latest album “K” yesterday, December 4, during the live episode of “It’s Showtime.” PolyEast Records’ Managing Director Jesmon Chua presented the award.

The album includes the hit singles “Sa ‘Yo Na Lang Ako,” “Kiss You,” “Kapiling Kita,” among others.

“K” celebrates a number of firsts for Karylle – joining a contest and collaborating with a cousin-rapper.

“I’ve never ever joined a contest before, but it was worth it because I got to sing a beautiful song – Lara Maigue’s ‘Sa ‘yo Na Lang Ako,’ which everyone loves,” expresses K. “I am also thrilled big time that I got to collaborate with one of my favorite rappers – my cousin Dash Calzado.”

The singer-actress also thanks Kiko Salazar for turning an unfinished “Kiss You” to complete song, and for contributing “Kapiling Kita.”

Karylle adds, “This album is extra special because of a million reasons. It was a reunion with my first two producers Ito Rapadas, who produced ‘Sa’Yo Nalang Ako’ and DJ MOD, who remixed ‘Bad Boys.’”

Karylle also expressed gratitude towards friend and co-host Jhong Hilario for choreographing “Kiss You,” which was performed by her “It’s Showtime” family, including its hosts, staff, Dumbo, XB GenSan and Showtime dancers, for the music video.

The album also fulfilled Karylle’s dream of recording something for the kids as “K” includes her version of “My Own Little Corner,” a song from the musical “Cinderella,” which Karylle topbilled last year for Resorts World Manila.

“I’ve never sold so many CDs in my life!” gushes Karylle. “I am so thankful for all the love and support. Many thanks to everyone who watched our shows with my band Reasons once or twice or even more times!”

Asked what her fans can expect in the future, she shared that she is currently working on a number of new songs with Alvin Cornista, whom Karylle met years ago when she celebrated her birthday with Nyko Maca + Playground. Karylle and Alvin collaborated on previous singles like “OMG,” “Running,” and “Bad Boys.”

Sam Concepcion scores three record awards in a day

Singer-actor Sam Concepcion proved that indeed he is a young hitmaker when he was awarded three record awards during his Birthday production number in ASAP last Sunday, Nov.30. He was awarded by Universal Records General Manager Kathleen Dy-Go three record awards - Gold for his album Infinite, a Platinum for his single Mahal Na Mahal, and a Double Platinum for Dati, a collaboration with Tippy Dos Santos and Quest.

Overwhelmed by these recorgnitions, Sam, via his Instagram account (samconcepcion) expressed his gratitude to his fans, record label and management groups,  “This ones for the SAMSTERS! You never fail to surprise me. The Gold, Platinum and Double Platinum don't mean anything without you. To the people who believed in me first, @universalrecordsphilippines @kat_dygo Stages and Star Magic, I will always be grateful. Giving back all the glory and honor to my God, My Savior Jesus. More music to come!”

Sam is set to release multiple singles in the coming weeks, and will soon star in teleserye, slated to premiere early next year.

Universal Records’ Kathleen Go is an Entrepreneur of Passion

Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go, over the years, has successfully prepared the country’s biggest independent record label to withstand the challenges of the ever-changing landscape of the local recording industry.

Because of this achievement, Joey Concepcion’s GoNegosyo has named Kathleen as one of the 50 Entrepreneurs of Passion. Her story is included in a special limited edition book with the subtitle “How Big Dreams and Good Ideas Became Great Businesses.”

In the commemorative book, Kathleen recalled how Universal Records have readied itself in the evolution of music formats in the country – from vinyl to cassettes to CDs to digital.

Kathleen also admitted that this inescapable evolution is really challenging, but according to her, one truth keeps her faith in the industry – “Music will never disappear and Filipinos will always be music lovers.”

She further adds, “We (in Universal Records) will always be here to service their needs, and at the same time discover and support great talents in OPM.”

With Kathleen’s supervision and guidance, Universal Records is the record label of OPM superstars like Gary Valenciano, Parokya Ni Edgar, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Gloc-9, Christian Bautista, Noel Cabangon, Sponge Cola, Sam Concepcion, Callalily, Kamikazee, Kuh Ledesma, among others.

Aside from her engagements as Managing Director of Universal Records, Kathleen is also busy helping Immaculate Conception Academy, her alma mater, and Xavier School in their various projects.

Gloc-9 and Vinci Montaner drop some dancing in “Businessman”

Anyone who has watched Gloc-9 at a live gig would know that one of the most well-received songs that get audiences on their feet is one of his oldest, telling us all to move our bodies and dance, to lighten the load of life.

On his 17th year in the music business, and after seven full length all-original albums, Gloc-9 goes back to some dance rap, bringing with him Vinci Montaner of Parokya Ni Edgar. Montaner has taken a breather from band life, but said yes to “Businessman,” a dance tune that speaks of an uncanny love between a rich girl and a poor boy, and how this difference is bound by nation that allows this disparity.

The rest of the song speaks of the unbelievable breadth of the girl’s wealth, with rooms full of money that isn’t counted and wallets are only for one thousand bills, where cars are a plenty and food is laid out on the dining table like there’s always a party. The girl is does not question how this money is earned, and where it comes from – her father is in a business that earns them billions.

In that world where everything’s served her on a silver platter, this girl wishes for what she has not experienced: to ride public transport and get her hands on some change, to try doing the laundry. The boy is enamored with her, surprised at the everyday things the girl wants to experience, where the things that are new to her is a way of life for him.

Yet “Businessman” is no easy love song, as it is one that’s layered with such a huge disparity between the rich girl and poor boy, that one can only wonder: what business is the girl’s father in, that allows him such wealth?

“Businessman” featuring Vinci Montaner will be launched on MYX on October 17 2014, Friday at 6:00PM. The music video features Winwyn Marquez. “Businessman” is part of Gloc-9’s DVD release “Biyahe ng Pangarap” to premier in November.

Dulce, Isay Alvarez, Sheila Francisco, Karylle lead 'Musikal'

In celebration of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ 45th anniversary, around 200 theater actors performed for what may be called the “biggest gathering of theater superstars” in history – “Musikal,” held last Friday (September 5) and Saturday (September 6) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The celebration was led by theater superstars Isay Alvarez and Robert Sena, Sheila Francisco, Dulce, and Karylle, who did not take her spot in the front line during the All-Star Finale.

Karylle’s gesture was lauded by some people who noted her humility.

A guest, who refused to be named, said, “Karylle obviously had a spot in the first row, but she was humble enough to stick to her place beside theater heavyweights like Isay, Robert, Dulce, and Sheila. Aside from her excellent performance that night, her humility and character shone during ‘Musikal.’”

Karylle performed lead roles in stage musicals like “The Little Mermaid,” “West Side Story,” and “Cinderella,” and reprised her Sita role from last year’s successful staging of Ballet Philippines’ “Rama Hari.”

“Musikal” opened with the overture by The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra with Gerard Salonga.

The revue started with musicals, which tackled old Philippines – “Walang Sugat,” represented by the comic spot “Makikiliti Kang Totoo,” performed by international musical star Sheila Francisco and Red Nuestro. It was followed by chosen numbers from “Ang Kababaihan Ng Malolos” and “San Andres B.”

The Ryan Cayabyab Singers performed a medley of songs from the musical “Lorenzo,” which elicited loud applause from the audience.

Former Sugarfree vocalist Ebe Dancel’s vocals soared in the “Rock Supremo” spot. He was accompanied by Ballet Philippines’ stars Carissa Adea, Kathrina Trofeo, and Richardson Yadao.

Children musicals came next. The segment opened with “Sandosenang Sapatos,” followed by last year’s multi-awarded “Bluebird of Happiness,” and “Batang Rizal.”

The “vaudeville” musicals were presented next with Roeder’s sexy, comic number “Titina” and the showstopping “Aba Ba Boogie,” from the 1980’s hit musical Katy with Isay Alvarez, star of last year’s revival.

The first act closed on a high note with a performance of some of the songs from Ryan Cayabyab and Bienvenido Lumbera’s “Noli Me Tangere” by the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers and the “Munting Pangarap” number of perhaps the most successful musical in recent years “Rak of Aegis.”

The second act opened with Myke Salomon’s performance of “Magsimula Ka.” Followed by spots from Ateneo’s “Sinta,” “Toilet the Musical,” and Ed Gatchalian’s “Rivalry.”

The cast of “Sa Wakas” performed next with the song “Bawat Daan.”

These numbers mirror the youth’s psyche.

The “Himala” spot was undeniably intense with powerhouse performances from May Bayot, Isay Alvarez, Cynthia Guico. and Dulce.

The mood turned gay when Myke Salomon opened the “Rainbow Segment,” with performances from “gay-themed” musicals like “Caredivas,” “Zsa Zsa Zaturnah,” and “Maxie.”

These fun numbers were followed by a revue of “Rama Hari,” perhaps the most important Filipino musical as it was made by icons of the industry – National Artists Bien Lumbera, Alice Reyes, and Salvador Bernal with the respected Ryan Cayabyab.

“Rama Hari” is based on the love story of Rama and Sita, as presented in the Asian epic “Ramayana.”

OJ Mariano (Rama) opened the suite with “Tagistis ng Ulan.” He was followed by Karylle (Sita), who looked every inch a royalty. She sang the most popular tune from the musical – “Magbalik Ka Na Mahal.” Then, a dance solo was performed by dancers from Ballet Philippines. Robert Sena joined OJ and Karylle for “Awit ng Pagsinta.”

The “Rama Hari” was greeted by thunderous applause.

“Musikal” ended with “Minsan Ang Minahal Ay Ako,” a song from the musical “Katy.” The said anthemic song has unofficially been the “theme of stage performers.” Dulce, Isay, and Aicelle, stars of last year’s revival, led all the performers in singing the song.

After that magical, emotional number, thunderous applause, and a long standing ovation greeted the more than 200 cast members of “Musikal,” further proving that the local theater industry is experiencing a new “high.”

A new ‘Your Year’ for Malay; launch this July 25

The road to the release of alternative band Malay’s debut CD is unlike any local releases. Years ago, the band digitally released “Your Year.” Due to insistent public demand, the band decided to re-record all the songs from the digital album and include two new tracks for the release of the 2014 version of “Your Year,” which will be launched this July 25 at Last Home, Ortigas Home Depot.

The album launch features performances from Malay and other bands. Entrance to the launch is the band’s CD.

“I consider this album a totally different animal from the initial digital release of ‘Your Year,’” says Malay frontman Pochoy Labog. “Now backed with the support of a major label, we've had more resources to use for production, starting with our producer, Mr. Jorel Corpus.”

With the help of their new producer, Pochoy feels that the songs in the album are closer to how he imagined it to be, or even better.

Malay is composed of Pochoy (vocals and guitars), Miguel Dayanghirang (bass), and Alden Abaca (drums).

“Working on the album took us out of our comfort zones, when needed,” states Pochoy. “I almost regret releasing the songs digitally, but I guess, it is part of the journey of this album.”

Pochoy considers this CD a “first meeting” with the listeners, and further adds, “they will experience the full sound of Malay for the first time.”

Asked why it was decided to release this album in physical format, Pochoy explains, “the decision to put this album out in CD format was brought about by requests from our listeners. I guess, to them, it is still necessary to have something tangible to experience the music.”

The music video of the album’s first single “Anak Ng Diyos” has been released on MYX.

SILENT SANCTUARY RELEASES NEW SINGLE “SA’YO”

After the success of their first 2 singles from their album “Monodramatic”, Silent Sanctuary returns to their roots of bittersweet melodies with the release of their new single “Sa’Yo”. The 4-minute song, according to songwriter Sarkie Sarangay, was inspired by a friend’s story of being uncertain in this thing called love. It has two versions in the album, the full band and the orchestral version.

Read our interview below to know more about the new single and video.

Why did you choose this track as the second single?
“Aside from marami nang fans na nag re-request na i-release ‘to, gustong gusto rin talaga namin ‘tong “Sa’yo” and we’re really excited to be able to share this song to a wider audience now that the music video is also gonna be released.”

What is the story behind the song?
“Actually, yung “Sa’yo” hindi ko nagawa out of a personal experience. Naka-kwentuhan ko yung isa kong kaibigan tapos na-insipire ako sa story nya, kaya nagawa ko ‘to. Yung lyrics nya kasi parang conversation lang ng dalawang tao na may feelings sa isa’t-isa pero hindi pa talaga nagkakaintindihan kung gusto ba talaga nila maging sila.” – Sarkie

What’s the concept behind the music video?

Tell us more about the video. How was the shoot?
“Director namin for this music video is Kid Guevarra (guitarist ng Tanya Markova/Dhruva Tara). Sobrang relax lang and enjoy kasi yung bulk ng trabaho nandun sa dancers eh. Haha. Wala naman naging masyadong aberya habang nag s-shoot kami. Sobrang nakakadala din nung mismong dance routine. Pati kami muntik na sumayaw...ulit. Hahaha.”

How is this different from the first 2 videos (Bumalik Ka Na Sa’Kin and Meron Nang Iba)
“As we said, ang main difference na nung video na ‘to is the dance routine care of our friends from the Sexbomb Girls. And yung main challenge syempre na pano mo ico-convey yung message nung kanta through the dance. Gusto lang namin ma-achieve is a simple video with a concept na di pa namin nagagawa.”

Silent Sanctuary is composed of Sarkie Sarangay on vocals and guitars, Chino David on violin, Anjo Inacay on cello, Jason Rondero on bass and Allen Calixto on drums.

Silent Sanctuary’s “MONODRAMATIC” is now available in music stores nationwide! Also available for download on iTunes and SPINNR.PH!

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK OF THE MUSICAL FILM “WALKING ON SUNSHINE”

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK OF THE MUSICAL FILM “WALKING ON SUNSHINE”
TO BE RELEASED ON JUNE 26 THE MOVIE IN PHILIPPINE CINEMAS JULY 2ND

Sony Music is proud to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack of the musical Walking on Sunshine. The stars of the film, including a global superstar, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Leona Lewis, perform the hottest hits of the 80’s. The movie is a romantic musical, full of fun and packed with highly recognisable songs, the story of a threesome tangled in love at a holiday location in Italy.

This musical film includes the greatest pop hits of the 80s, making for the perfect soundtrack, with an irresistible line-up of songs that make it impossible to sit still while listening. Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me”, a #1 single in the UK and US, sets up the theme of romantic hope. Madonna’s unforgettable hit “Holiday” is just right for singing along (“celebrate!”) in the cinema or at home. And if anyone is in doubt about the film’s fun factor, then Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” makes things as clear as they could be. There are some quieter, soulful tracks too – “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles is one, and a beautiful, soft rendering of the Roxettes’ “It Must Have Been Love” is another – but the dominant mood is punchy and upbeat. “Wild Boys” gets a raunchy performance, full of energy. “How Will I Know?”, a smash hit for Whitney Houston, is a funky, foot-tapping song of a love-struck girl, and with the powerful female vocals of “Venus”, you have to agree with the lyrics: “Yeah, baby, she’s got it!” This pyrotechnic parade of top tracks is rounded off by Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”. All of these numbers are performed with real verve by the stars of the film cast.

A highlight of the film is the appearance of the multi-award winning and Grammy-nominated Leona Lewis, who makes her debut in movies in Walking on Sunshine, performing on the soundtrack and in the film itself. She came to attention in 2006 as the winner of The X Factor in the UK and has released two studio albums, the mega-selling Spirit in 2007 and Echo in 2009. Her international breakthrough single, “Bleeding Love”, received five awards. She has released ten singles, four of which have reached number one in various charts.

Walking on Sunshine has all the makings of a sing-along cult film à la Mamma Mia – thanks to its charming story and locations, fine acting, and above all its stellar soundtrack, an unbeatable compilation of 1980s hits. No-one could fail to smile, move to the rhythm and tap their feet with these songs.

ABOUT THE FILM
Directed by Max and Dania (the duo behind one of the most successful UK independent films of all time – StreetDance 3D), it stars Leona Lewis, Katy Brand, one of the UK’s top woman comedians, and Greg Wise, an actor renowned for his work in BBC drama, alongside rising stars Annabel Scholey and Hannah Arterton, plus Giulio Berruti in the role of gorgeous man, this is a film for a girls’ night out. After a whirlwind romance, Maddie is preparing to marry Raf and has invited her sister Taylor to the wedding in Italy. What Maddie does not know is that Raf is Taylor’s ex-holiday flame, and the love of her life. And that is only one of many bumps along the film’s road to happiness.

The film is locally distributed by Pioneer Films, and the Philippine theatrical release is July 2nd.

Johnoy Danao sells the music in first mainstream album

Dubbed as the must-have OPM album of the year, Johnoy Danao’s first mainstream album Samu’t-Sari boasts of songs that tackle love in its different faces. This is Johnoy’s first album under a major record label, and he chose Universal Records to take care of his songs.

“Releasing an album independently was a great experience for me,” admits Johnoy. “But, I realized that working with a label, gives me a chance to reach a wider audience. Limited din kasi talaga pag ikaw lang mag-isa. Kahit anong sipag mo, may hangganan sa maaabot na tenga.”

Johnoy, who has established his own strong following in his years as an independent artist, is proud to be in the Universal Records’ roster of artists, which includes OPM President Ogie Alcasid and Noel Cabangon.

“I had a very pleasant experience working with Universal Records’ resident producer Ito Rapadas when we we were working on last year’s PhilPop album,” says Johnoy when asked why he chose Universal Records to be his first mainstream label. “Plus, I really respect the artists in the roster. They are the people I look up to. I am in good company.”

When asked what the buyers of his album should expect from the album, he quips, “Samu’t-Sari is my way of introducing my music to a wider audience.  It is never about me, my face, the visuals. It is all about the music, the voice.”

When asked why, of all OPM songs, he chose Beer and Sundo to be included in the album, he replies, “Ang ganda ng mga kantang ‘to. Ito yung mga kanta na alam mong pinag-isipan. Ito yung kanta na minsan iniisip ko na, ‘sana ako nagsulat nito.’”

Johnoy describes the entire album as easy listening, perfect for sentimental moments or road trips.

Johnoy considers Buntong-hininga and Bakuran two of his favorite cuts from the album.

“Buntong-hininga kasi magaan, maaliwalas, at napapanahon sa init ngayon,” describes Johnoy. “Bakuran (his collaboration with Aiza Seguerra) naman at sumasalamin sa kung paano tayo lahat nagmamahal.”

Johnoy is also happy that his version of the 2013 PhilPop entry Kung Di Man is included in the album. The song, which was interpreted by Ney Dimaculangan in the festival, was 1st runner-up in last year’s PhilPop.

Ikaw At Ako, perhaps the most notable Johnoy Danao song, is also included in the album. The said song was used as theme in one of the episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Johnoy expressed pride over his Samu’t-Sari album because he added different elements in every song in the album.

He cites, “we used Tuba in Salubong, Bassoon for Malayang Bilanggo… All songs have their own individual highlights.”

Gloc-9’s Myx Music Awards bodes well for mainstream Pinoy music

Gloc-9 won four major awards in the Myx Music Awards 2014 (MMA2014), the most for any artist who was nominated.

But what is more important about this win, is not so much the fact that Gloc-9 won in four out of six categories that he was nominated in, nor that he won four times more than any other artist.

It is that Gloc-9 won it for a song like “Magda.”

The idea of Magdalena is not new. The legend that is Freddie Aguilar introduced us to “Magdalena” in the early 1980’s, a folk song about the plight of a girl who was misunderstood because of the work she was forced into doing. In the Aguilar song, Magdalena is seen as “sawimpalad,” living a wretched life, where her story is one of choicelessness.

Gloc-9’s “Magda” does not point a finger at this woman’s life. The songwriter tells this story with compassion and understanding. Spoken from the perspective of her childhood sweetheart Ernesto, the story is allowed its romance, as it is allowed its heartbreak and undoing. Because Ernesto speaks of Magda, we are given the chance to see Magda as a spit of a girl, as someone who left her childhood behind. In the present she is a woman who is trapped in the cage of her own doing.

The song does not judge Magda, as it does make her human. She is treated as solitary and independent, she is allowed her own individuality, her own voice.

This is Gloc-9 at his most creative, where his decision to use another character to speak about Magda allows for a distance, a non-judgmental stance about her character. It is this creativity that was awarded by the MMA this year. But more importantly what they were honoring was this rapper-songwriter-artist’s decision to tell a story we would rather not hear, of a woman we would rather be blind to.

And this is really the value of Gloc-9’s quadruple wins in this year’s MMAs. He won for the song “Magda” in the context of mainstream original Pilipino music that makes hits out of repetitive lovesongs and novelty. He won for “Magda” at a time when the originality and relevance of original Pilipino pop music is being questioned.

Each MYX Music Award is composed of 60% audience votes and 40% artist or peer votes. And on a year when Gloc-9 wins big for a song like “Magda,” we are being told how the audience and the members of the industry as well, are in fact ready for difficult stories and complex songs.

Winning those four MMAs for “Magda,” as such, is not just a measure of Gloc-9 as artist. It is a measure of what the audience of local music is ready for. One hopes original Pinoy mainstream music heeds this call for creativity and relevance.

Hundred Islands 100-km ultra int'l marathon slated in Pangasinan

PRESS RELEASE
February 6, 2014
Hundred Islands 100-km ultra int'l marathon slated in Pangasinan

The biggest international sporting event in 2014 is set to happen in Pangasinan. The first-ever 100-km. ultra international marathon fires-off on March 15-16, 2014. Starting from the Lucap wharf of Alaminos City, it will traverse the western Pangasinan towns of Bani, Anda and Bolinao, then back to Alaminos City.

The top winner in the open marathon will receive P100,000 and a trophy while the second and third place finishers will receive P30,000 and P20,000 respectively. A finisher’s medal and certificate will be given to all finishers.

The event will have an attendance coming from African nations such as South Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya. Some European countries are also expected to participate, like runners from London. They will test the mettle of local ultra runners who recently topped international competitions.

Organized by RenderFarm Sports and JonesPR (a public affairs/marketing communications consultancy) for the benefit of Alaminos 100, the international marathon is widely supported by Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste and Pangasinan Governor Amado Espino, Jr., together with other LGU mayors. The ultra marathon actually coincides with the 2014 city fiesta of Alaminos City, Pangasinan on March 19-24, 2014. The ultra marathon serves as the ‘curtain-raiser’ of the festivities.

Alaminos City is home to Hundred Islands, a resort destination famous for its boating, swimming, diving and picnics. Alaminos City is known for its unique and tasty longganisa. Pangasinan is 170 km. north of Manila with an average temperature of 27.91 degrees centigrade. It will offer runners and their team an extraordinary start of their summer adventure as they explore the Hundred Islands and the white sand beaches of Anda and Bolinao.

Philip Pacle of RenderFarm Sports, one of the organizers and an ultra runner himself,  foresees “the race will be exciting since most of the runners will experience the thrill of running on 99% flat cement/asphalted roads with a 5-km winding and ascending route along Tiep, Bolinao going to the 50-km mark at night time. As it is a fast foot race, ‘curfew time’ is set at 18 hrs.”

At the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum (held Feb. 4),  the organizers of the Hundred Islands 100 Km. Ultra International Marathon launched the premier sports event to be held in Pangasinan from March 15-16, 2014. The marathon starts in Alaminos City and will cover the towns of Bani, Anda and Bolinao, then back to Alaminos City. The winner gets P100,000. Supported by Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste and Gov. Amado Espino, Jr., the marathon features the scenic route of western Pangasinan, especially the famous Hundred Islands. From left: Kazel Celeste of the Alaminos City Mayor's office, Jones T. Campos, Organizer and Marketing Director of the Ultra Marathon, Philip A. Pacle, Co-organizer and Race Director, and Ruby Bernardino, PIO of the office of the Pangasinan governor.

Another highlight of the ultra marathon is a 50-km marathon from Bolinao and will end in Alaminos City. Open to male and female marathoners, top prize is P20,000, while second and third place finishers get P10,000 and P7,000 respectively. Consolation prize for the 4th to 10th placers in the 100 km. ultra marathon is P5,000; while P4,000 to the 4th to the 10th placers of the 50 km marathon.

The ultra marathon hopes to put Alaminos City and Pangasinan in the international arena of world-class sporting events as it targets international and national participation. Promoting wellness and competitive sports, its organizers plan to institutionalize it as a regular multi-sport activity. Plans are underway to organize a mid-year triathlon.

Participants from Kenya arrived last week, while 2013 North Face 100 Km Trail Champion Arnold Lozano of Baguio City, 200 Km Champion Marcelo Bautista, BDM 100 Km 2013 Champion and record holder Joel Bengtay of La Trinidad, Benguet; and an elite runner from London have already signified their intention to join the ultra marathon. A Philippine Army team led by Crisencio Zabal, is also joining. Top runners from Davao and Samal are also joining the race.

Registration fee for the 100 km. ultra marathon is P3,500 and P3,000 for the 50-km marathon. Included in the registration are souvenir shirts (100 km), welcome drinks and snacks, get together party before the run, carbo loading, boat ride and island hopping at Quezon Island, Children’s Island and Governor’s Islands. Runners’ inclusion are:  singlet and bib, finisher’s shirt, finisher’s trophy, snacks at the 50k mark (100 km), finisher’s refreshment and snack, and vehicle support banner, if needed.

“We hope to generate more support from Philippines’ top corporations especially those who have sports products, or have sports as their CSR,” says Jones Campos, one of the organizers. Race director/organizer Philip Pacle likewise expresses hope that the success of the ultra marathon will be a milestone in his years of organizing running events.
