OPM ARTISTS RECORD "THE PRAYER" FOR YOLANDA VICTIMS

On October 15, 2013, an earthquake with the energy equivalent to "32 Hiroshima bombs" devastated the Visayas, and parts of Mindanao and southern Luzon.

Two days later, the Loboc Children's Choir sang, "The Prayer," with the rubble of the hundred year old Loboc Church as their backdrop.

Their performance moved so many people here and abroad. Then, tragedy struck again.

On November 8, Typhoon Yolanda, the most powerful tropical cyclone of the year hit East Samar, Samar and Leyte.

Thousands died. Millions were left hungry, desperate, and homeless.

Relief efforts from the Philippines and the rest of the world are currently helping the victims survive and find temporary homes.

But the bigger challenge is how to help all these people get back to their normal lives.

This is where we took inspiration from the Loboc Children's Choir's performance.

These children may be from Bohol, but their innocent voices represent not just their home province but also earthquake-damaged Cebu, war-stricken Zamboanga, and typhoon-devastated Leyte, Samar, and Iloilo -- all of whom are praying for a miracle to allow them to rebuild their lives.

And so we asked the help of various Filipino artists to lend their voices, to represent our country, and show the world that the Philippines has one voice, one prayer -- that we work together to help our countrymen rebuild their lives brick by brick.

The resulting song will be used to raise funds through downloads. The proceeds will go to the helpPH campaign, a project by the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF). It is a non-profit organization made up of major companies from the private sector and leading NGOs. PDRF, organized in October 2009 after Typhoons Ondoy, Pepeng, and Frank to tap resources for reconstruction efforts during emergencies brought about by calamities, is one of the three identified institutional conduits approved by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to facilitate cooperation and coordination between the Philippine government and the private sector in formulating and implementing reconstruction strategies.

Its goal for Cebu, Bohol, Zamboanga and now the areas affected by Typhoon Yolanda is long-term solutions and programs that will bring businesses and jobs back to these areas. They are also planning to look into better designs for houses more suited for a country that gets hit by typhoons and earthquakes. They are focusing on rebuilding the communities which includes: immediate help, provide housing, education by rebuilding school houses, providing economic incentives, and livelihood opportunities.

As a way of giving thanks to all the countries that helped us, we offer to them "The "Prayer".

MKTO LIVE IN MANILA!

It's a warm mid-summer day in sunny Southern California, and Malcolm Kelley, 20, and Tony Oller, 21, are indulging in lunch and banter outside of the Los Angeles studio where they record. Soon, they're playing tag with their manager's 3-year-old son, ping ponging to all corners of the studio. Initially, this time slot was allotted for an interview.

The duo aren't dodging their scheduled sit down—now on hold for the last half hour—so much as they're just being themselves, reveling in their current circumstances. With their actions and music, Kelley and Oller enjoy themselves, and do it on their own terms.
Recently signed to Columbia Records, the twosome offer a vibrant mix of pop, hip-hop and R&B, crafted in an undeniably organic way, which makes the music sound as fun to the listener as it was for the two to make--but there's an edge to it, too. It’s something that will be evident on their upcoming debut album, Role Models, as well as their lead single, “Thank You.”

“We're really happy with it,” says Houston-bred Oller of the single. “We’re still working on the rest of the album, but as of right now, I think we have most of what we're wanting to get across. We have ballads, really soft, ‘Someone Like You’ stuff. We have up tempo party songs. We're trying to do a lot of sounds.” And it’s not just the sounds, but also the content: The two discuss the ups and downs that go with adolescence and growing up, navigating a territory that anyone coming of age can find relatable.

“I think there's a lane for everything in music,” Oller continues. “If people like it, great, but if people don't, we made a record we're proud of.”

In addition to their sound, it’s this sort of comfort in their own skin that defines MKTO, and informs not just the content of their music, but also the origins of their name. “It's simple,” Oller says of the moniker, which not only represents their combined initials (Malcolm Kelley, Tony Oller), but something more. “It also stands for what our album kind of is: Misfit Kids and Total Outcasts—just like the kids we were in high school.”
“Whether we like it or not, some kids are still gonna look up to us, and if I can give them a good direction to go in, or be a positive factor, then I'll be that,” Kelley says proudly.

Both accomplished adolescent actors (Oller’s credits include starring in the Disney Series As The Bell Rings as well as the movie Beneath The Darkness, while Kelley had major roles on ABC’s hit Lost as well as in the film Antwone Fisher), the two first met while filming Gigantic, in 2010, in which they played best friends. It was there that they first bonded and realized their shared love of music.

“While acting, you got a lot of down time, so we would just crack open the computer and start making some music,” Kelley recalls. He had been rapping with his friends since he was in his early teens, but had finally found a companion to help pursue the passion seriously.

“We used Garage Band a lot on our Macs,” remembers Oller, who has played piano and sung since his adolescent years, and even appeared on Showtime at the Apollo and Star Search. “We didn't know at all how to record. We loved music for the simple pleasure of loving music. Not trying to do anything, just enjoy creating it.”

Before long, the savvy upstarts uploaded a handful of videos to YouTube, displaying the unique flavor they offered by rerecording other artists’ hits and giving them a fresh spin. With songs like “Made In America,” “Just The Way You Are,” and “Champion,” they’d post videos of themselves recording the cuts, with Oller’s vocals easily distinguishable from the original and Kelley’s rapped verses adding an otherwise unexpected but fitting twist.

In early 2012, MKTO signed to a new partnership between longtime musical collaborators Emanuel “Eman” Kiriakou and Evan “Kidd” Bogart. The two, who stumbled upon the guys’ video for “Champion” online, have been responsible for hits from Beyonce, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Hot Chelle Rae, Sean Kingston, Jason Derulo and many more. MKTO felt that this formidable creative partnership was the perfect hit song breeding ground for their diverse song style.
Shortly after they initially linked up, the foursome headed to New York and took meetings with every major label, as MKTO wowed execs with their total package. In March, they signed with Columbia Records. “They showed us longevity in their artists,” Kelley compliments.

“When we worked on Gigantic, we always talked about what it would be like to do a show,” Oller reflects. “We had songs that we did and we'd sit in our trailers and have the mirror up and be like, ‘Dude, what if we f****in' walked out on stage and everyone started screaming?’ Everything we hoped for—three years laters, here we are. It's really just a dream come true for us.”

Watch MKTO Live on December 14, 2013 (Saturday) at Eastwood Mall Open Park, 4pm and Venice Piazza at McKinley Hill, 7pm.

This event is presented by Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, Eastwood Mall, Venice Piazza, in cooperation with Ivory Music & Video and Sony Music.

Kris Aquino "I Love Christmas Shopping" at The SM Store TVC

Like all families in the Philippines, which is said to have the longest Christmas celebration in the world, the Aquinos have their own special way of celebrating Christmas.

“It’s our Christmas tradition to have Mass together on Christmas Eve,” says Kris, the youngest daughter of icons of democracy Ninoy and Cory Aquino, and a celebrity in her own right, who is considered the Queen of all Media. “When Mom was alive, it was at Times Street and Father Arevalo would be the one to say Mass. That was our family’s Christmas celebration until she passed away.”

Since 2010, however, the Aquinos – Kris, sisters Ballsy, Pinky, and Viel and brother Noy and their families - have been having their get together at Bahay Pangarap. That’s, of course, because her brother Benigno Simeon Aquino III is the President of the Philippines. “It’s a time for family,” says Kris, who is the face of the I Love Christmas Shopping at SM campaign. “It’s Mass, dinner, gift giving, then others go to their in-laws.”

She adds that every year since 2010, she has had an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival.  Premiere nights, however, are usually held on December 24 and she usually has to rush to the family dinner.  But “God is good, they adjust the time to wait for me to arrive.” Now that she has her own family, she and her kids have their own tradition – traveling after the MMFF awards night. In 2010, they spent the holidays in Singapore; in 2011-2012, it was New York; 2012-2013 in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.”

This year, “the awards night is on December 27, so we plan to leave on the 28th.  It will be hopefully London this time, but if my sisters have their way, it will be Japan so we will all be together.  But the kids want London, so we’ll see.” Here, Kris shares with us her thoughts on the joys of Christmas, gift giving, and why she loves holiday shopping at SM.  It reveals a side of her rarely seen – her love of family, her incredible sense of organization, her generosity.

Kris Aquino "I Love Christmas Shopping at The SM Store TVC

Gift giving is an essential part of Christmas.  How do you prepare for this? What gifts to do like to give?
“Christmas is a time when you can show the people important to you what they mean to you.All my pamangkins have grown so they appreciate cash or GCs.  I have been giving SM GC’s for many years because you can use it in the SM Store, and SM Supermarket. They are happy they can use it in so many stores. It’s a joy to receive SM Gift Certificates. I also like to give them gadgets.” For my inaanaks, it’s also gadgets and GCs. For my friends who are rather wealthy, I donate in their name.  I have a special card designed where I tell them I gave to a charity in their name. For those who work in my shows and movies, I give gift certificates talaga. Last year, I also brought 8 chosen staff to a trip to Korea – 5 from Kris TV and 3 from my teleserye. Those memories will really last.I also prepare Christmas baskets for the friends of Bim and Kuya Josh. These have candies, little toys, and are beautifully packaged. For teachers, coaches, trainers, banks, I prepare a beautiful basket of my favorite products, much alike a supermarket and bathroom collection.”

What about your kids?
“With the kids, I’m so guilty of the fact that every week is Christmas.  I am lucky that they are very kind and happy for everything they have. Bimby nags me to ‘save your money, Mama.’  Kuya Josh always asks for money to give to everybody because it is his joy to share – from the drivers, the PSGs, the yayas, those in school.  He is super happy when he does that.”

Do you think that sharing with the less fortunate is an essential part of Christmas?  How do you do this?
“Yes, of course. Because of Kris TV, Kim Chiu and I learned that gift giving is really for kids. We like less fortunate kids to be happy, and work on this.We are also preparing lots of Noche Buena packs with Ryza.  We hope that these will reach many people. I’ll also course some through Red Cross for those in evacuation centers.I feel that we are comfortable all year round, so it’s really our turn to do our share to make others happy for Christmas.”

What do you like most about shopping at SM?
“I liked the styling in the ads, and I’ve been wearing their accessories non-stop. I also like the blouses, which are delightfully on P800-900, but super pretty. I’m so proud of that.I also like buying gift certificates in bulk for gifts. These are gifts that will be appreciated as you can buy from many stores with these.”

Please share with us your thoughts on Christmas and SM.
“It’s not hard to endorse SM as it such a part of Philippine culture. The only difference for me is that there is an expectation that everything I am wearing is imported an expensive. That’s our goal with Liz (Uy) that every time I say thank you to SM, what I am wearing will elicit a wow because it’s so put together, looks expensive, and yet affordable for everybody.  And that’s what I am looking forward to, to make it aspirational yet reachable. I’m proud to be representing SM and to let everybody know it’s really fun to shop. Why is it fun to shop? Because you won’t run out of money, and really get good quality.”

Gloc-9 has outdone himself in Liham at Lihim

Last year, Gloc-9 scored big when he released his single Sirena (featuring Ebe Dancel) became a phenomenal hit and a critics’ favorite. Sirena, which tackles the life of gays in a different and inspiring light, also became the favorite collaboration song among the biggest live concert artists like Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Noel Cabangon, among others.

The album Mga Kuwento Ng Makata, which scored a Gold Record award for its outstanding sales, also included the hits Bakit Hindi (with Billy Crawford), Hindi Mo Nadinig (with Jay Durias), among others. The said album was named Album of the Year in the recently-concluded Star Awards for Music.

Gloc-9’s outstanding feat last year is hard to top, but for the rapper’s latest release Liham at Lihim, it is easy to say that indeed the wordsmith has outdone himself in his latest release. In the album, Gloc-9 plays with other possible ways of telling timely stories, but never really talked about.

Magda, the first single to be released from Liham at Lihim and a collaboration with OPM young icon Rico Blanco, is the perfect example of this experimentation, where the storyteller is not the rapper, as it is another persona Ernesto, who has found the girl he had lost in Magda. That he finds the latter as an adult woman, working nights on a stage, with only her shoes on, is all that we know about what Magda does. And while she might be the star of this song, it is Ernesto who speaks for and about her, and Magda's silence is what fills the rest of the song.

The music video of Magda, featuring Jennylyn Mercado and Alex Medina, instantly entered the MYX Daily only a day after its premiere.

Proof of Gloc-9’s success as a storyteller and recording artist is the phenomenal outpouring of support during Liham at Lihim’s album launch last Saturday, October 26 at the Eastwood Central Plaza, where thousands of fans attended and celebrated the album’s little secrets and letters.

Magda and the rest of Liham at Lihim will prove that songwriting and creativity still make for the songs that are relevant not just because these sound contemporary, but because these engage nation in intelligent conversation.

Protecting your mobile assets

Protecting your mobile assets
Why it’s time for you to start insuring your mobile phone

There are a myriad of reasons why consumers today would opt to get an insurance policy. Breadwinners may want to protect themselves and their families in case they get injured or sick. Others may want to cover their worldly possessions like cars, houses, properties, yachts, jewelry, and paintings.

On the other hand, Hollywood diva Jennifer Lopez and Victoria’s Secret Angel turned Project Runway host Heidi Klum thought it wise to protect their physical assets. Heidi Klum’s legs are insured for $2.2 million, while J.Lo’s famous derrière is worth a staggering $27 million.

With a gadget insurance program, you know exactly what to do in times like this

No matter how bizarre the circumstances are, acquiring an insurance program to protect what matters most can help ease worries away. And with the degree of attachment Filipinos are now giving their mobile phones, it makes great sense for mobile phone users to start considering insuring their handsets as well.

And this is especially true when mobile gadgets have gone from mere luxury to social necessities. More than a high-definition, multimedia business phone, it has become a communicator, navigator, educator, health watcher, babysitter, and the hottest status symbol.

Nowadays, some, if not most, people get serious anxiety attacks when they leave their smartphones at home, let alone lose or break them. Mobile phones are now considered big investments, ranging from P15,000.00 for the mid-end devices all the way to a whopping P50,000.00 for the high-end ones with the latest cameras boasting of the highest megapixels.

Unfortunately, the pricier they are, the more susceptible they are to accidents and cases of robbery. These sleek and stylish gadgets can easily fall into the toilet, slip out of the hand onto the pavement, or get drenched in the water during the rainy season. And of course, there’s the looming threat of theft with your smartphone as the much-coveted prize. These incidents are so common that we all know someone who lost or damaged his or her mobile device at some point.

According to statistics, from over 500 serviced claims covered by telco giant Globe Telecom to date, 81% were due to theft; 48% of which happened in public vehicles or while commuting, 35% in public places such as malls, restaurants, and bars, and 17% in private places like at home, office, in a hotel room, and in private cars. And as Christmastime nears, expect these troubling numbers to increase. So how can mobile phone users mitigate the high-cost of losing or breaking a prized mobile phone? Sign up for a comprehensive mobile phone insurance.

Gadget insurance is a growing trend among telco companies worldwide -- proof that a mobile insurance policy is now a very relevant product for all mobile phone owners in this day and age.

In partnership with global insurance provider Ace Insurance, Globe launched the first-ever mobile phone protection program in the country, Globe Gadget Care. The revolutionary product is offered exclusively to Globe postpaid subscribers.

Free 1-month coverage for new and re-contracting subscribers
And as an early Christmas gift for subscribers for a wonderful and hassle-free experience with their mobile phones, Globe Postpaid is extending a free one-month subscription to all new and re-contracting customers availing of a new handset to allow them to experience Globe Gadget Care.

This free 1-month offer is spot-on because people tend to be extra careful and sensitive when using brand-new phones. They take extra precaution when bringing it to public places and conscientiously buy protective cases to avoid scratches and dents. But in reality, theft and accidental damages are ultimately out of one’s control.

“The mobile phone is definitely a big investment for more people these days. It is even an extension of one’s self, so it’s definitely worth protecting it with an insurance program that will make you confident and secure,” said Globe Head of Postpaid Raul Macatangay. “Globe Gadget Care is another breakthrough service from Globe that offers comprehensive coverage for mobile phone theft and accidental damage, giving subscribers a worry-free experience when using their prized handsets.”

For as low as P89 per month, subscribers can continue enjoying the benefits of the comprehensive coverage after the free 1-month coverage, which can protect devices against accidental damage, theft or robbery, and outstanding postpaid bill balance.  The mobile protection program also guarantees hassle-free handset replacement, easy claims processing, and worldwide protection coverage for all subscribers.

To know more about Globe Gadget Care, call the Globe Gadget Care Hotline (02)7565400 or toll-free 1-800-8-7565400, or visit www.globe.com.ph/gadgetcare or any Globe Store nationwide.

Gloc-9 rises with “Magda” from Liham at Lihim

We might say that Pinoy rap is going through a revival. What we must know is how different Gloc-9's kind of rap remains, regardless.

At the heart of Gloc-9's icon is the fact of his creativity. This is a rapper who dares writes songs from nation, trailing an eye on the things we fail to see, listening to words no one else hears.

If the first single off his new album Liham at Lihim is any indication, then Gloc-9 has again raised the bar for songwriting in general, Pinoy rap in particular.

A collaboration with rock icon Rico Blanco, “Magda” is Gloc-9's storytelling at its best. For one thing, he doesn't take on the persona of Magda; instead he speaks as Ernesto, telling the story of Magda – the little of it that he knows. For another, Magda's story doesn't unfold easily, where many things are left unsaid, and much of what is truth happens in a letter. This is also why Gloc-9 thinks “Magda” the best choice for a carrier single, given the CD's title.

But Magda's complexity, as Liham at Lihim suggests, is borne of the fact that she is trapped in what she does, and we cannot understand why. Gloc-9 doesn't insist that we understand it, but through Ernesto we are being made to see the sadness in this situation, the nostalgia for the past, the longing for better.

Talking about the inspiration for the song, Gloc-9 says: “I was thinking of reasons why a daughter who was most precious to her father, could end up living the life of a prostitute. One line from the chorus goes “Magdalena, anong problema? / Alam naman natin na dati kang Nena / at sa ‘yong ama, ikaw ay prinsesa.”

That chorus is sung by Blanco, something that Gloc-9 is grateful for. “Rico is one of the most talented singers we have right now, and even though I wrote the song, Rico is the only one who can sing the chorus the way he does and bring to the song his own uniqueness. Sobrang galing,” he says.

“Magda” reminds us that there are many difficult stories to tell, and very few who dare tell it the way Gloc-9 and Rico Blanco do. This song reminds us that there are no judgements, as there are questions. And there is no right and wrong, as there is need and love. If not hope.

Without a doubt, Pinoy rap's going through a revival. With “Magda” and all of Liham at Lihim, Gloc-9 proves he is in a class all his own.

Liham at Lihim will be released in October 2013. This is Gloc-9's second album with Universal Records after 2012's Mga Kwento ng Makata and the critically-acclaimed hit single “Sirena.” Liham at Lihim features Gloc-9 collaborations with Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Quest, Marc Abaya, Zia Quizon, Kamikazee, Eunice of Gracenote, Denise Barbacena, and Sly Kane.

Singer-dancer-actor Sam Concepcion chose to shed his boy-next-door, squeaky clean image via the release of his latest album Infinite, under Universal Records. The album showcases the young singer’s growth, evolution into being one of the finest singers in the land, perhaps the best in his batch.

“You’ll get to know Sam the performer in the album,” says Sam. “This album is ME, NOW. It says many things about who I am at present.”

The album’s single No Limitations, a collaboration between Sam, Billy Crawford, Kris Lawrence and Marcus Davis, exhibits Sam’s desire to be taken as a more serious performer. Its modern, edgy video, featuring Solenn Heussaf, gives one an idea where Sam would want to go as a recording artist.

Luckily, fans of the young singer seem to appreciate the “new” Sam as his first music video off the album is currently number one on the Pinoy Myx Countdown, and is receiving favorable airplay from radio stations. The single also remained on top of the mymusicstore charts for six weeks.

He adds that he is also thankful that he was given the chance to collaborate with the most prolific recording artists in the country – Billy Crawford, Christian Bautista, JayR, among others.

Christian penned the song Love, Love, Love for Sam. Sam and Christian were both discovered STAGES when they worked together 10 years ago in the musical The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Rescue You, previously recorded as a Christian-Sam duet, is now a solo song rendered by Sam.

JayR and Sam performed a duet in the album – I’m The One, where both of them showcased their R&B influences.

Sam also records his version of Mahal Na Mahal Kita, an OPM ditty given a more contemporary feel.

Singapore-based composed Tat Tong contributed There’s No Me (Without You).

Sam gives a welcome surprise in the inclusion of modern-anthemic song Di Ka Nag-iisa, a collaboration with up and coming band Runmanila and rapper Dello.

Infinite also includes bonus tracks Panalangin and Kontrabida – both songs are lifted from Sam’s landmark projects last year (the movie IdoBidooBidoo and the 2012 PhilPop, where Sam’s entry won 2nd place).

Infinite Tracklist:

1.    No Limitations
2.    I'm The One
